Sumatra Road, Hampstead

The rear garden of a family home in North London where the client’s wish was for a low-maintenance and interesting space to connect the interior of their refurbished home with the outside.

A raised hardwood deck sits at the same level as the internal floor and provides an extension of the kitchen when a set of bi-fold doors spanning the width of the property are opened. On the decked area a brick and stone barbeque makes the space ideal for entertaining.

The lower portion of the garden is paved with sawn sandstone and has a number of raised cube planters of varying sizes that are built against the paving. The planters, which are planted with buxus balls and an acer palmatum underplanted with herbs, are finished with painted render and give height and interest to the area.

The paved area is framed by a low buxus hedge, behind which is an abundance of lush layered planting including shrubs, perennials and bulbs to provide seasonal change and year round interest to the garden.

The layout of the space allows for a shed to be positioned in the garden, and an angled step sunk into the decking reiterates the shape of the design and is highlighted at night by LED lights recessed into the decking around it.
